My first exposure to woodturning was a green-wood bowl class at John C. Campbell Folk School in 2016.  I read about Chapel Hill Woodturners in the Raleigh News and Observer and contacted Frank Penta. Frank invited me to come and learn.  My prior woodworking was limited to "stitch and glue" and "skin on frame" kayaks.
